Hello! I’m the state investigative reporter for The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware.

My career first began in Evanston, Illinois as a high school reporter, where I learned my nosiness is in fact a gift. It was there that I first felt the rush of reporting a good story – something I’ve been chasing ever since. Journalism has led me to live in Syracuse, New York; Richmond, Virginia; Kansas City, Missouri; Baltimore, Maryland and now Wilmington, Delaware. It sparked my love for exploring new and different types of cities.

My entire career has been dedicated to local journalism, specifically holding those in power accountable while also seeking solutions to the state’s most pressing issues. I pride myself in being an aggressive reporter in every story I pursue, yet also always leading with curiosity and empathy.

Most recently, I became the state investigative reporter for The News Journal, in which I cover the Delaware General Assembly and state politics. In 2020, I covered Joe Biden's presidential campaign, while also covering the COVID-19 pandemic. I was the on-the-ground reporter at the Democratic National Convention, presidential election and inauguration for the USA Today Network. A question I asked the president-elect at a press conference went viral, and his answer dominated national headlines for days.

I graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in newspaper and online journalism and a minor in political science. I spent a lot of late nights at The Daily Orange, the independent student newspaper.

I have been recognized several times by the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association, specifically for my reporting on the pandemic. If you'd like to chat with me about my work or the most recent TV show you’ve binged, email me at meredithnewman2@gmail.com or follow me on Twitter at @MereNewman.
